How Much Does It Cost to Hire a Web Designer?

If you're reading this, there's a good chance your business needs a fresh web presence, and you're not quite sure where to start. Maybe you don't have a designer on staff. Maybe your current site feels dated, and you know it's time. Either way, the first question is almost always the same: what is this actually going to cost me?

I've been building websites for over 15 years, and I run a digital agency called WebTitans. So let me give you a straight answer, along with the context most pricing articles leave out.

The short answer

Most custom web design projects at WebTitans start around $5,000. We're willing to work with smaller budgets, but $5,000 is generally where we like to begin for something built properly.

That number can climb quickly depending on what you need. A polished informational site sits near the lower end. A brand-defining site with custom design, integrations, and animation runs higher. Something like a software build or heavy custom functionality can go well into the tens of thousands.

We usually price projects as a flat project fee rather than pure hourly, and we quote a range: an optimistic number and a pessimistic number. That way you know the floor and the ceiling before we ever start, instead of getting surprised halfway through.

What actually moves the price

The single biggest factor is complexity. A simple informational site is one thing. The moment you add API integrations, custom animation, plugins that talk to other services, or specialized functionality, the scope and the price grow with it.

Here's what tends to push a project up:

  • Custom design vs. templates. Fully custom work takes more time but gives you full control and something that's truly yours.
  • Integrations. Connecting your site to other tools, platforms, or services adds real development hours.
  • Functionality. E-commerce, booking systems, member areas, and the like are their own builds.
  • Animation and interactivity. The details that make a site feel premium take time to get right.
  • Compliance needs. Things like HIPAA compliance and HIPAA-ready forms require additional work and cost.

Most people underestimate how much time a real website takes. That's understandable, especially right now, with AI in every headline.

Let's talk about AI, since you're wondering

You can absolutely type a prompt into an AI builder and get a website. That part is true. But it tends to look exactly like what it is: AI-designed.

The value isn't the AI itself. It's having someone who can captain that ship. AI is just another tool in the toolbox, and we use it to move things along like anyone else. What you're really paying for is the person driving it, the one making the design decisions, catching the things a prompt won't catch, and shaping the output into something that actually represents your brand.

So when someone asks, "Why pay $5,000 when I can do it myself for free?" my honest answer is this: you can, and plenty of people do. But we regularly meet clients who went the DIY route first and spent hundreds of hours on a site we could have built in around 50, with a far better result.

Why custom is worth it: the restaurant analogy

We build sites for longevity. We're looking for clients who see their website as an investment up front, something built to last, not something thrown together cheap and fast.

Templates are part of that conversation too. We'll sometimes use a template to kick a project off, but we usually chop it up or move toward custom design, and here's why.

Think about a dish you loved at a restaurant. The chef made it perfectly. Now try to recreate it at home. Even with the same recipe, it tastes a little different, and it's hard to get back to that restaurant quality. Templates work the same way. When someone else built the original, and you start changing the ingredients, things can break. And because we didn't build that template from scratch, fixing it can take longer.

A templated site also quietly locks you into whoever created it. With custom design, we have full control, so we can fix, extend, and evolve it without fighting someone else's structure. We also make sure the SEO is set up correctly from the very beginning, so you're positioned well with Google from day one instead of bolting it on later.

A real example

We're working with a concierge nursing company right now. It's essentially run by one person, who brings in nurses on her clients' behalf.

Her challenge was presence. We wanted her to look like a large, established company, not a small operation. So we spent real time on the branding and design, making sure that the moment someone lands on the site, it reads as legitimate and trustworthy.

You only get one first impression. When someone hits a site like that, the reaction is, "This is a real, serious company. I feel safe giving them my business." That's the whole point. A project like this landed around $20,000, and the design is doing exactly what it needs to do: making a one-person business feel like a major player.

What isn't included in that first price

The build is the build. Here's what to budget for beyond it, keeping in mind it all depends on what your site actually needs:

  • Domain and hosting. For a typical informational site, expect somewhere between $100 and $300 a year. Not a big number.
  • Ongoing SEO. We have our own SEO product, WebTitans Growth, which runs from $249 to $699 a month. That covers continuous optimization, content creation, and growing your organic traffic over time.
  • Third-party tools. If you want an AI chatbot, for example, we use a tool called Chatbase, which is its own subscription. Compliance features can carry added costs too.
  • Maintenance. We charge $100 an hour for ongoing web design and development, and $85 an hour for project management.

That last one matters more than people expect. A website isn't launch-and-forget. Sites break. There's malware, there are hacks, there are DDoS attacks. When something goes down, you want someone available to get it back up quickly, and that's part of what ongoing support buys you.

Freelancer vs. agency vs. the bargain route

You're going to find wildly different prices out there: a $500 Fiverr gig, a $2,000 freelancer, a $25,000 agency. Let me be fair about this, because the cheap route isn't wrong for everyone.

When you go cheap, you're doing a lot of hand-holding. Every small change to that $500 site is something you have to direct, tweak, and manage yourself. With an agency, we'd rather act like doctors: proactive, researching your vertical, and prescribing what we think will actually work for your business. We want to be the ones handing you the right prescription, not just filling orders.

And plenty of businesses start cheap for good reason. They take the $500 route, their business grows, and eventually they want a web presence that matches where they've gotten to. Here's the thing I see happen: they upgrade their physical space, their print materials, their signage, everything in the real world starts looking sharp, and then their website doesn't match anymore. That gap is usually the moment it makes sense to move toward an agency, so your online presence finally lines up with your real-world one.

On pricing, we try to make that step easier. We're flexible with payments and do payment plans, so a $25,000 site might be broken into three or four payments instead of one big hit up front.

How to get the most for your money

If you want a smooth project and real value, do a little prep before you reach out to anyone:

  • Nail down your scope early. Know what you're getting, and know how many rounds of design changes are included.
  • Get clear on what you actually want. Tell the agency your goals and let them come back with pricing built around what you're trying to accomplish.

And when you're vetting a designer or agency, ask:

  • Can we see your past work?
  • How fast can you get things done, and what does your timeline look like?
  • Who's on your team, and do we get to meet them?

That last question matters, especially with offshore talent. WebTitans is a US-based company, but we also have teams in Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Pakistan. There's an old negative connotation around offshore work, but the truth is that talent is genuinely excellent when you find the right team. What makes it work is having someone in the middle. I sit between the developers and the client and speak both languages, technical and business. Having tried-and-trusted teams plus someone translating between the two goes a long way.

Common myths, corrected

A few things I find myself correcting over and over:

"A website should be a one-time cost." It isn't. Domains, hosting, maintenance, and SEO are ongoing. A site is something you maintain, not something you buy once and forget.

"It should only take a week." For custom design, we typically run a four to eight week turnaround, largely because there's real back-and-forth feedback to get right.

"All designers are basically the same." They aren't. This is the one I feel most strongly about.

I think of WebTitans a bit like a tattoo parlor. When a new client comes on board, my job is to place them with the right artist. We have a range of developers and designers under our banner, and not everyone is the same, in style or in price. Some are more premium, some are more cost-effective.

I'm transparent about that. If someone comes to me and says they have $3,000 to build a site, I'll likely place them with our Pakistan team, who do fantastic work and get it done within that budget. If someone needs US-based Shopify work, our US team handles it, and that might run $5,000 to $10,000 with a retainer. It all depends on where you are in your business and what you need, and my job is to guide you to the right fit.

The bottom line

Here's what I really want you to take away: starting your online presence shouldn't be scary. We don't want it to be. We want you to feel comfortable, and we love delivering work that clients are genuinely proud of.

You know the feeling of buying a new car? You get in, it smells new, you pull out of the driveway, and there's this little wave of pride and happiness. That's the feeling we want you to have when we hand you your website. We want you so proud of it that you show it off to your friends, your family, and your customers. The reaction we love most is simple: "Whoa, this is incredible."

So if any of this resonates, reach out. We genuinely love talking to people, and we want you to feel safe and comfortable through the whole process. No ego, no attitude, just a team that treats clients like family. You can get in touch through our contact form, or book a meeting with us directly and let's talk about what you're building.
